First Aid Policy

⚠️ SAFEGUARDING-CRITICAL POLICY — REQUIRES HUMAN SIGN-OFF BEFORE USE This policy touches child safety. Before it is published or relied upon, Al Fajer Private School leadership must: (1) fill every [NEEDS AFS INPUT] placeholder, (2) appoint and name the school nurse(s) and first aiders in Appendix A with real license details and contact numbers, and confirm the school's designated hospitals, and (3) formally adopt it with real dates. Nothing in this document has been invented to fill those gaps.

This policy applies to all students, staff, and visitors at Al Fajer Private School. It should be read in conjunction with the Health & Safety Policy.

1.0 Policy Statement

1.1 Al Fajer Private School will ensure compliance with the relevant standard procedures and policies regarding the provision of first aid for students, staff, and visitors, and that procedures are in place to meet that responsibility. Because AFS is a KG1 – Grade 6 school, our students are young children: first-aid arrangements assume that every student is accompanied and supported by an adult at every step.

2.0 Aims

2.1 To identify the first-aid needs of the school community.

2.2 To ensure that first-aid provision is available at all times when people are on school premises and on trips.

3.0 Objectives

3.1 To appoint the appropriate number of suitably trained people as first aiders to meet the needs of the school community, and to maintain current qualification requirements for those people.

3.2 To provide relevant training and ensure monitoring of training needs.

3.3 To provide sufficient and appropriate resources and facilities.

3.4 To inform staff and parents of the school's first-aid arrangements.

3.5 To keep accurate health records and accident reports.

4.0 Medical Facilities

4.1 The school is required to ensure that a suitable environment is provided for the medical and therapy needs of staff, students, and visitors.

4.2 [NEEDS AFS INPUT: AFS medical-room location(s) — the source school operated separate health units in each of its buildings; confirm where AFS's medical room(s) are located on campus and publish the location(s) here]

5.0 Accident Procedure

5.1 An adult at the scene of an accident needs to make a quick assessment of the severity of the accident.

5.2 Minor cuts and grazes

5.3 Serious injuries are any injuries that require immediate medical attention by a school nurse.

Ambulance Services

Bahrain Emergency Call Center 999

Designated hospitals [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm AFS's designated hospitals and their phone numbers — the source school's hospital list has not been carried over]

# Hospital Phone
1 [NEEDS AFS INPUT] [NEEDS AFS INPUT]
2 [NEEDS AFS INPUT] [NEEDS AFS INPUT]
3 [NEEDS AFS INPUT] [NEEDS AFS INPUT]

5.4 Upon arrival of the emergency services or the ambulance, a handover will be made by the School Nurse or the staff member who attended the incident.

5.5 All accidents must be recorded and reported accurately before the end of the school day, with copies sent to the Principal and the appropriate member of the school leadership team [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm AFS leadership roles receiving accident reports], and followed up as needed.

6.0 Illness

6.1 Any student feeling unwell is taken to the School Nurse, escorted by a staff member — students are not sent alone or in the care of another student. In Kindergarten (KG1 – KG3), the class teacher or duty teacher will assess the child and contact the nurse to attend where necessary.

6.2 Any student having difficulty breathing, or experiencing dizziness or faintness, must remain with a teacher or other member of staff. A messenger should be sent to fetch the nurse, or, if possible, the ill student should be accompanied directly to the medical room. Front-office staff should be contacted immediately if the nurse is not in the medical room.

7.0 First Aid Training and Qualifications

7.1 At all times when students are at school, there will be at least one person on site qualified to a minimum level of Appointed Person.

7.2 Each School Nurse is a qualified Registered General Nurse / Pediatric Nurse, licensed by Bahrain's National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA).

7.3 A first aider is a person who has successfully completed a suitably approved course. An Appointed Person is a person who has successfully completed a suitably approved one-day course. Where a first aider wishes to continue as such, qualifications are renewed every two years, or at shorter intervals where required for specialist qualifications. All AFS staff complete refresher first-aid awareness training on a recurring cycle [NEEDS AFS INPUT: first-aid training provider, course name, and training frequency — the source school's named providers have not been carried over].

7.4 A list of staff qualified as practical first aiders is maintained in the format at Appendix A. This list will be kept up to date, posted on the faculty-room notice board, and shared with all staff [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm where AFS publishes the first-aider list — a Staff Handbook is not in the current AFS policy set].

8.0 First Aid Kit Provision

8.1 First-aid kits are available at the following locations [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm and list the first-aid kit locations across the AFS campus — the source school's building-by-building list has not been carried over]. As a minimum pattern for a KG1 – Grade 6 campus, kits should be available at:

8.2 Off-site visits and trips: a request form should be completed and forwarded to the School Nurse at least 3 days prior to the scheduled trip. Portable first-aid kits are available from the School Nurse (see the Trips, Excursions & Residential Policy).

9.0 Students' Medical Conditions

9.1 A list of students who have medical conditions, together with details of those conditions, is updated as needed (at least termly) by the School Nurse. Hard copies of this list are kept in the medical room, and the information is available to authorized staff through the school's secure records [NEEDS AFS INPUT: AFS student-information system].

9.2 Individual health care plans are prepared for students with more serious medical conditions, including but not limited to diabetes, asthma, anaphylaxis, and epilepsy. This information is shared with the staff who need it, in the medical room and the faculty room. Staff responsible for the day-to-day care of these students will be provided with training and support from the nursing team. Students' own medicines are kept in the medical room. Training will be provided for staff taking students on school trips where required. (See also the Healthy Eating Policy for the school's allergy provisions.)

10.0 Responsibilities

10.1 Included within the responsibilities of the School Nurse are:

11.0 Emergency Procedures

11.1 Where an injury or other medical condition is an emergency, an ambulance should be called. Ideally, this will be on the advice of the School Nurse or a first aider, but there may be circumstances where it is apparent that such a call must be made immediately.

11.2 Parents will be informed as soon as further medical treatment is necessary and whenever an ambulance has been called. If a parent cannot accompany a student to the hospital, a member of staff will accompany the student to the hospital and remain with them until the parents/guardians can take over responsibility.

12.0 Accident Recording

12.1 An Accident Report Form is completed for each incident, generally by a person witnessing the events. If not generated by the nurse, the report form is then forwarded to the nurse, who will complete any further details required, and it is provided to the Principal. A copy is kept in the medical room.

13.0 Informing Parents

13.1 In accordance with the requirements of Bahrain's Ministry of Health, students' immunizations should be kept up to date, and records should be completed for each student to ensure that all vaccinations are current.

13.2 Any medical problem — including but not limited to allergy, asthma, convulsions, or diabetes — should be noted in the student's health record on file, and it is important that parents inform the nurse of any changes to their child's medical condition.

14.0 Contacting Parents

14.1 For any significant signs and symptoms of illness — e.g., fever, persistent cough and cold, pain that is not relieved by analgesics, possible fractures or dislocations, or a bumped head — we immediately inform the parent/guardian by phone call to come to school, and advise them to take the child to the nearest medical facility as soon as possible for further intervention. For any urgent condition, we call an ambulance immediately and send the student to the nearest hospital, accompanied by a staff member if the parent has not yet arrived. For non-serious cases — e.g., a moderate stomachache, a headache, or repeated visits to the medical room — we inform the parent/guardian by phone call, email, or letter.

15.0 Nurse Visits

15.1 All AFS students are young children: any student visiting the medical room is accompanied there by a staff member. (The source school required a teacher's permission slip for older students to attend unescorted; this does not apply in a KG1 – Grade 6 school — every student is escorted.)

15.2 Where a student is to be collected following a nurse visit, a nurse pass will be issued to the parent/guardian, to be shown at reception before leaving the school. Students are released only to a parent/guardian or an adult authorized by them.

16.0 Medication Administration

16.1 A medical consent form, signed by every parent on admission to the school, pre-authorizes the School Nurse to administer a defined list of common, nurse-approved medications and simple topical treatments [NEEDS AFS INPUT: nurse-approved medication list — the source policy named specific over-the-counter medications; AFS's nurse and leadership must approve and publish the school's own list]. For any medication outside this pre-authorized list, the nurse informs the parent before administration.

16.2 Parents are requested to inform the School Nurse of any prescriptions or medications being taken by the student.

16.3 Prescribed medications should be kept in the medical room and taken under supervision there. Every administration is recorded (medication, dose, time, administered by), in line with the Health & Safety Policy.

17.0 Additional Support and Mobility

17.1 In the event a student requires physical support to get around campus, the school will arrange appropriate assistance (e.g., a wheelchair or crutches) [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm AFS mobility-support equipment and accessible routes on campus].

17.2 A medical note from a certified medical practitioner stating the duration of the limitation is required to be presented to the School Nurse.

17.3 In the event a student requires physical support during an evacuation, designated staff will support the student throughout the evacuation process using the school's evacuation equipment [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm AFS evacuation-assistance equipment and the staff assigned to it], in line with the individual evacuation plans required by the Health & Safety Policy.
