⚠️ SAFEGUARDING-CRITICAL POLICY — REQUIRES HUMAN SIGN-OFF BEFORE USE This policy touches child safety. Before it is published or relied upon, Al Fajer Private School leadership must fill every [NEEDS AFS INPUT] placeholder — in particular the arrival/collection times, gate and room names, and the Grade 6 dismissal arrangement — and formally adopt it with real dates. Nothing has been invented to fill those gaps.

1.0 Rationale
1.1 Al Fajer Private School takes seriously its responsibility to supervise students to ensure their safety while on school premises or on school visits.
1.2 Arrangements are made to ensure that students are adequately supervised from arrival on campus, throughout lessons, transition times, break times and after-school activities, until they are handed over to parents at the end of the day.
1.3 The school acts in loco parentis to ensure students are supervised during the time that they are on school premises or otherwise in the care of the school.
- 1.3.1 It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that students arrive at school safely. The community of adults and students who make up the school have a duty of care to look out for, nurture and safeguard each other.
- 1.3.2 There is a degree of risk in all activities. Assessing the level of risk is a professional task, and staff exercise professional judgment about each student under all circumstances.
1.4 If a teacher decides to allow a student out of adult presence, the student is:
- 1.4.1 Capable and responsible at that time; and
- 1.4.2 Carrying out a task appropriate for that student at that time.
Given that AFS educates young children (KG1 – Grade 6), such occasions are limited and always risk-assessed.
1.5 The teacher has anticipated all hazards and risks and has taken steps to eliminate them. This involves talking with the student about being responsible and taking care in the classroom or during playtime.
2.0 Arrival at School
2.1 Security staff are positioned at entrance points throughout the school day. At the beginning of the school day, students may enter the campus from [NEEDS AFS INPUT: morning arrival time]. There is a supervised early-morning drop-off for the youngest students from [NEEDS AFS INPUT: time] in [NEEDS AFS INPUT: designated arrival area], supervised by members of the school leadership team. [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm AFS's arrival supervision arrangements]
2.2 Alternatively, parents/guardians of KG students may accompany their children to their classrooms, provided they are wearing the appropriate visitor identification. Classroom doors open at [NEEDS AFS INPUT: time], and parents, nannies or drivers can hand the children directly to the class teacher.
2.3 Once in the classroom, a student may leave only to use the toilet or with specific instructions from the class teacher.
3.0 Movement Around School
3.1 Through the end of Grade 3, students are supervised at all times by an adult while moving around the school. Movement should be safe, calm and orderly; no running in corridors is permitted. From Grade 4 upwards, staff supervise transitions through corridors from the classroom door.
4.0 Supervision During Break Times
4.1 A duty rota ensures that students are adequately supervised during break times. The responsibilities of the member of staff on duty are:
- 4.1.1 To arrive on time in the area they are responsible for.
- 4.1.2 To observe student interactions and look out for anything unsafe, unfair or intimidating.
- 4.1.3 To be aware of any adult whose presence is not justified and to challenge them appropriately.
- 4.1.4 To take appropriate action in the event of an accident or injury.
- 4.1.5 To ensure orderly lining up at the end of break.
- 4.1.6 To ensure that incidents occurring during break are communicated directly to the homeroom teachers at the end of break.
4.2 Absence of Duty Teachers
- 4.2.1 If a duty teacher is absent, a substitute teacher will cover their duties. Should no substitute be available, the grade-level lead will organize short-notice cover. [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm role that arranges cover]
5.0 Early Collection
5.1 Occasionally parents ask for a child to leave school early for a scheduled appointment. Parents should notify the class teacher in advance. A designated member of the office staff will collect the child from the classroom and escort them to their parent in the reception/administration area. The child may then leave with their parent on presentation of an early-leave pass to security. Parents/guardians are not permitted to take children directly from the classroom during the school day. [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm early-collection procedure and the role that escorts children]
6.0 Supervision at the End of the School Day
6.1 For the youngest students (KG), parents/guardians collect children directly from their classrooms at the end of the school day.
6.2 For the elementary grades, students are handed over directly to parents/guardians in a designated pick-up area.
6.3 Children are handed over only to a parent/guardian or a known, authorized adult from their designated pick-up area.
6.4 Any child not collected within ten minutes of the collection time is taken to the reception/administration area, where a member of staff will contact the parents and supervise the child until they are collected. [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm uncollected-child procedure and responsible role]
6.5 Siblings are supervised in an after-school care area until handed over directly to a parent/guardian. [NEEDS AFS INPUT: confirm whether AFS offers wraparound/after-school care]
6.6 [NEEDS AFS INPUT: AFS's dismissal/collection arrangement for Grade 6 — the source school released its oldest students to leave independently, which is not appropriate for a KG1–Grade 6 school; AFS must define how Grade 6 students are released.]
7.0 Supervision on Buses
7.1 While the school is not directly responsible for supervising children on buses, it has a duty to support that supervision as far as possible. Complaints of inappropriate behavior on buses are thoroughly investigated and addressed under the Behavior, Rewards & Sanctions Policy. If inappropriate behavior persists, the school reserves the right to withdraw a student's use of school transportation. See also the School Transportation Policy.
8.0 Extracurricular Clubs
8.1 Clubs run from [NEEDS AFS INPUT: club times].
- 8.1.1 Children attending clubs are escorted to the club location.
- 8.1.2 The adult accompanying the group from class informs the club teacher of any absences.
- 8.1.3 Club teachers register attendance and check with the office if there are any anomalies.
- 8.1.4 At the end of the club, club teachers take the children to the designated collection area and ensure each child is handed over to a familiar, authorized adult.
- 8.1.5 Teachers responsible for clubs stay with the children until they are collected.
